We’re holding our summer Pecha Kucha event next Thursday evening outside of Junctionview Studios. The festivities kick off at 8:00 with local band Shin Tower Music, and presentations begin at 8:30. I’ve been on the Pecha Kucha Columbus organizing team for a year-and-a-half and thoroughly enjoy watching these events progress.
No two Pecha Kucha Columbus events are the same. Each one yields its own personality reflected by combinations of local art, music, food, film, dance, and theater. But all of our events feature a series of local speakers that show 20 images and speak about each image for 20 seconds. At next week’s event, presenters include architects Beth Blostein and Bart Overly; Charles Erickson with The Small Business Beanstalk; Walker Evans with themetropreneur.com; artist/educator Sarah Grosh; visual artist John Humphries; meditation expert Daron Larson; purse designer Mara Marcom; Eric Ralph with yourmilton.com; cartoonist Talcott Starr; Nick Wolak with the Thompson Football Club; and photographer Rainer Ziehm.
In addition to the speakers, artwork by the Couchfire Collective will be on display inside. THOUGHTco will screen print T-shirts for guests throughout the evening ($4 for shirts brought from home and $10 to buy a new one). The Japanese Crepe Cart, Rad Dogveg, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, and Pattycake Bakery will sell refreshments. Guests of drinking age are welcome to bring their own alcoholic beverages. The suggested donation is $2 per person. Attendees are encouraged to bring water and lawn chairs. Junctionview Studios is located at 889 Williams Avenue. Free parking is available on the street and alongside the building. Click here for a detailed map.
Pecha Kucha was founded in Tokyo in 2003 as a way for designers to meet and share their work in public. It has morphed into a massive celebration with events in 330 cities around the world. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for “the sound of chitchat,” it rests on a simple and momentum-driven presentation format of showing 20 images and speaking about each one for 20 seconds. Pecha Kucha Columbus was formed in February of 2007, and this will be our 14th event. The next one will take place on November 11. Visit our Facebook and Twitter pages for more information.
