If you happen to be in Columbus tomorrow night and could benefit from getting lost in some dark melodic head-thranging, check out Pelican at The Summit. I recently came across the Chicago instrumental riff masters and was quickly drawn to their heavy yet emotive style. The quartet has performed together for a decade and just released their fourth studio album What We All Come To Need on L.A. indie label Southern Lord. Several of the band’s songs hover around seven minutes, resulting in deft deep rock novellas. “The Creeper,” the strongest cut from their new record, wields a hefty punch that reminds me of what Karma To Burn would sound like after hitting a little methadone.
Pelican is Trevor de Brauw on guitar, Bryan Herweg on bass, Larry Herweg on drums, and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec on guitar. This will be the band's only Ohio appearance and the second to last show of their fall tour. L.A. doom metal duo Black Cobra, Boston heavy metal outfit Disappearer, and Columbus’ own Brainbow will share the bill. Tickets cost $13 and doors open at 9:00.
