Earlier this week I swung by the Krema Nut Company on Goodale Boulevard to fetch some holiday treats. Founded in 1898, it’s one of the oldest peanut butter manufacturers in the country. Krema’s all-natural peanut butter is made of fancy grade Spanish peanuts and doesn’t contain added salt, sugar, hydrogenated vegetable oils, or preservatives. It’s the same formula they’ve used since the beginning. They roast their peanuts in small batches by hand and even have a Master Roaster who has been with them for more than 25 years.
What all this means is that they make some of the best peanut butter on the planet. And it’s right here in our backyard. I thought a peanut was just a peanut, but Krema carries blanched, redskin, dry roasted blanched, almonized, butter toffee, honey roasted, hot redskin, and in-shell peanuts. And of course peanut brittle. But they also carry a head-scratching variety of cashews, almonds, walnuts, Brazil nuts, pecans, nut butters, popcorn, chocolates, candies, sugar-free candies, dried fruits, and snack mixes. It’s complete insanutty. Here are some tidbits according to Krema Nut’s Peanut Butter Fact Sheet:
- It takes 540 peanuts to make one jar of peanut butter.
- 83% of all Americans eat peanut butter.
- More than 700 million pounds of peanut butter are consumed annually in the United States. That’s enough to cover the entire floor of the Grand Canyon.
- Children prefer creamy peanut butter, while adults prefer crunchy.
- Peanut butter contains more fiber than baked beans, potatoes, spinach, cabbage, or carrots.
